Getting Started with The Witcher 3 Modding

Vortex, Script Merger, the Next-Gen Update decision, and REDkit content mods

The Witcher 3 modding workflow has two essential tools: a mod manager (Vortex or manual install) and Script Merger. Without Script Merger, any non-trivial mod list will produce script-edit conflicts that crash the game on load. With it, conflicts auto-resolve in 95% of cases.

This guide walks the standard install on the Next-Gen Update of The Witcher 3.

Step 1 — Decide: Next-Gen Update or Classic?

The 2022 Next-Gen Update reworked The Witcher 3 with new graphics features (DX12, ray tracing, FidelityFX), DLC integration, and engine changes. It also broke most pre-2022 mods.

For a 2026 install:

  • Default to Next-Gen Update. The mod catalogue has caught up. New mods assume NGU.
  • Stay on Classic only if you have a specific pre-NGU mod list you don't want to lose. Steam's default is now NGU; opting back requires the Classic beta branch.

This guide assumes NGU.

Step 2 — Install Vortex (or use manual)

Vortex is Nexus Mods's official mod manager. Configure it for The Witcher 3.

Vortex tracks installed mods, manages load order, and integrates with Script Merger automatically.

Alternatively, manual installation works: extract each mod into The Witcher 3/Mods/. More tedious for mod lists of 10+ mods.

Step 3 — Install Script Merger

Script Merger is the community-built script-conflict resolver. Essential.

Install per the README. Vortex can auto-launch Script Merger after each mod install if configured.

Step 4 — Install your first mods

Three popular first picks (all NGU-compatible):

  • Friendly HUD — UI cleanup, modernises the HUD.
  • Auto Apply Oils — applies appropriate oil for the current enemy automatically. Major QoL.
  • HD Reworked Project — comprehensive texture overhaul. Heavy on VRAM.

Install via Vortex or manually.

Step 5 — Run Script Merger after each install

If you've installed multiple mods that touch the same script files, Script Merger detects the conflict. Click Check for ConflictsMerge Selected. Script Merger produces a merged version that combines both mods' edits.

Most merges are automatic. Some complex conflicts require manual resolution; Script Merger shows the conflicting lines and lets you choose which version to keep.

Step 6 — Optional: install REDkit content mods

The 2024 REDkit release enables substantially deeper modding — new quests, new locations, new dialogue. The catalogue is growing.

REDkit mods install through the same Vortex/manual flow but are heavier than typical script mods.

Common gotchas

  • Game crashes on load with multiple mods. Almost always unresolved script conflicts. Run Script Merger.
  • Pre-NGU mod on NGU game. Won't work. Look for the NGU-updated version or accept incompatibility.
  • Texture mod tanks performance. HD Reworked and similar are VRAM-heavy. Reduce in-game texture quality settings or skip these on lower-end GPUs.
  • Friendly HUD not working as expected. Friendly HUD interacts with many other UI mods; conflicts are common. Read its compatibility notes.
  • Save game won't load. Mod removed that the save references. Re-enable, save fresh.

The Witcher 3's modding scene is mature in 2026. The NGU break and recovery means the catalogue is more current than most ten-year-old games, and the REDkit release continues to add capability.
