Getting Started with The Sims 4 Modding

Enable mods, find the Mods folder, install MCCC + CC, and manage the patch cycle

The Sims 4 modding has two distinct categories: CC (Custom Content) for visual additions and script mods for gameplay logic changes. Both go into the same Mods/ folder, but they behave differently. This guide walks the standard install.

Step 1 — Enable mods in game options

In-game: OptionsOther tab. Check:

  • Enable Custom Content and Mods
  • Script Mods Allowed

Restart the game. Mods are now active.

Step 2 — Find your Mods folder

Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods/

Everything goes here. The folder has subfolders for organisation if you want, but the game scans recursively.

Step 3 — Install script mods

Three near-universal script mods:

  • MC Command Center (MCCC) — comprehensive game control. NPC randomisation, story progression, age controls. Most-installed Sims 4 mod historically.
  • Wonderful Whims (or Wicked Whims for adult content) — relationship and attraction overhauls.
  • Better Build/Buy — build-mode QoL.

Each is a .zip or .package plus .ts4script. Extract into the Mods folder.

Step 4 — Install CC

CC packages are visual additions — hair, clothing, makeup, furniture. Drop .package files into the Mods folder.

CC creators are on Tumblr, Patreon, individual sites, and CurseForge. Quality varies dramatically. "Maxis Match" CC is designed to fit vanilla aesthetic; "Alpha" CC is more realistic.

Step 5 — Manage with a CC organiser (optional)

For large CC libraries, Sims 4 Tray Importer and CC Manager help organise and identify content. CurseForge's launcher is emerging as a more structured option.

Common gotchas

  • Mod doesn't load. Script mods must be enabled in Options. Confirm both checkboxes.
  • CC doesn't appear in Create-a-Sim. .package not in Mods folder, or game wasn't restarted after install.
  • MCCC missing after EA patch. Update MCCC. Deaderpool (the MCCC author) updates quickly after each EA patch.
  • Game loads slowly. Large CC libraries (thousands of files) extend startup time. Cull periodically.
  • Conflict between two script mods. Read each mod's compatibility notes.

The Sims 4 modding scene is fragmented (no central Workshop) but enormous in absolute terms. Once you have MCCC plus a curated CC set, the modded experience is substantially different from vanilla.
