Getting Started with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly Modding
Vanilla Anomaly install, GAMMA modpack, and pick-and-choose customisation
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly is itself a mod, but it has its own modding scene on top. The two paths most users take: install Anomaly base, or install GAMMA (a curated modpack on top of Anomaly). This guide walks both.
Path A — Vanilla Anomaly
Download Anomaly from ModDB. It's a free standalone install.
Run the installer. Anomaly creates its own game directory. Launch and play.
That's it for vanilla Anomaly. The base "mod" is feature-complete.
Path B — GAMMA modpack
GAMMA is a curated modpack on top of Anomaly with hundreds of additional mods, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements.
Installation is more involved:
- Install vanilla Anomaly first.
- Install Mod Organizer 2 configured for Anomaly.
- Run the GAMMA installer script, which downloads and configures every mod GAMMA includes.
- Launch through Mod Organizer 2.
The full GAMMA setup takes 1-2 hours on first install (large download, many mods).
Path C — Pick-and-choose mods
If you want neither vanilla Anomaly nor GAMMA's curated set, you can pick individual addons from ModDB's Anomaly mods catalogue. Mod Organizer 2 handles the install.
Be aware: many Anomaly addons aren't tested together. Conflicts are common in custom mod lists.
Recommended approach for new players
If you've never played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. modded:
- Start with vanilla Anomaly. Learn the game's pace.
- If you want more, try GAMMA. It's a curated experience that doesn't require custom mod selection.
- Build your own mod list only if GAMMA doesn't satisfy you. This requires more debugging tolerance.
Common gotchas
- GAMMA installer fails. Network or path issues. The GAMMA Discord is helpful.
- Performance terrible. GAMMA is heavy. Lower graphics settings; consider a smaller mod set.
- Save corruption. Anomaly saves are fragile. Back up frequently.
- Mod conflict in custom list. Read each mod's compatibility notes. The Anomaly community Discord has compatibility threads.
