Getting Started with Monster Hunter: World Modding
Stracker's Loader, REFramework, Fluffy Mod Manager, and mod-safety in online lobbies
Monster Hunter: World modding is built around two community foundations: Stracker's Loader for native mods and REFramework for Lua scripting. Most popular mods declare one or both as dependencies. This guide walks the standard install.
Step 1 — Install Stracker's Loader
Stracker's Loader is the foundational mod loader for MH:World. Required by most native (.dll) mods.
Drop the DLL into your MH:World install root. Steam Input must be disabled for Stracker's Loader to work — check Steam's per-game controller settings.
Step 2 — Install REFramework (optional but recommended)
REFramework is the Lua scripting layer most modern mods use. The same framework runs MH Rise, RE4, RE2, RE3, DMC5, Dragon's Dogma 2.
Download the latest release. Extract the DLL and dependencies into your MH:World install root.
Step 3 — Install Fluffy Mod Manager (optional)
Fluffy Mod Manager simplifies MH:World mod installation, especially asset replacements. Optional but very useful for non-technical users.
Step 4 — Install mods
Three popular first picks:
- Better Matchmaking — adjusts matchmaking criteria to find sessions faster.
- Performance Booster — engine tweaks, particularly helpful on lower-end hardware.
- Custom Lobby Names or HD Texture Pack — cosmetic/QoL.
Stracker's Loader-dependent mods: drop into nativePC/ folder. Asset mods: into chunkN/ folders or use Fluffy. REFramework Lua mods: into REFramework/autorun/.
Step 5 — Launch
MH:World loads normally. Stracker's Loader hooks at startup; REFramework loads alongside; mods take effect.
Step 6 — Multiplayer considerations
Private lobby with friends: mods work, parity not strictly enforced.
Public matchmaking: don't mod gameplay-altering items. Visual mods are usually safe; balance and progression mods can trigger anti-cheat warnings.
Common gotchas
- Stracker's Loader doesn't load. Steam Input enabled. Disable in Steam's per-game settings.
- REFramework crashes. Version mismatch with current MH:World patch. Update REFramework.
- Native mod missing. Stracker's Loader not installed or not loaded.
- Iceborne content missing. Some mods need the Iceborne expansion.
- Capcom patch broke things. Wait for REFramework/Stracker's Loader updates.
If you've worked with REFramework on any Capcom RE Engine game, you've learned the foundation. The pattern transfers across MH Rise, RE4, etc.
