Getting Started with Crusader Kings II Modding
Workshop subscriptions, Paradox Launcher playsets, and the CK2-vs-CK3 decision
Crusader Kings II modding follows the Paradox playbook. Same launcher, same Workshop pattern, same playset model as CK3 and EU4. If you've modded any Paradox game, the flow is identical.
Step 1 — Subscribe via Workshop
CK2 Workshop hosts the catalogue. Three iconic picks:
- A Game of Thrones (CK2 AGOT) — Game of Thrones total conversion. Years of polish.
- Elder Kings — Tamriel setting.
- After the End — post-apocalyptic North America.
Step 2 — Configure playset in Paradox Launcher
Same launcher as CK3. Playsets, drag-to-order, later mods override earlier.
For total conversions: run standalone, no other content mods stacked.
Step 3 — Launch
The launcher's Play button uses the active playset.
Step 4 — DLC awareness
CK2's accumulated DLC count is high. Mods may require specific DLCs (Old Gods, Holy Fury, etc.).
Common gotchas
- Game crashes on launch. Malformed script in a mod. Check error log.
- Total conversion missing DLC content. TC was built before a DLC; that DLC's content won't appear in TC playthroughs.
- Achievements disabled. Standard Paradox rule.
CK3 is the modern Paradox medieval-strategy game. If you're starting fresh in 2026, CK3 modding is probably the better starting point. CK2 modding is for players specifically attached to CK2's mechanics or to one of its TCs.
