Getting Started with Boneworks Modding
MelonLoader install, mods folder, and Bonelab migration considerations
Boneworks modding uses MelonLoader (IL2CPP build) plus community-built helpers. The scene is smaller than other VR modding ecosystems but mature. This guide walks the standard install.
Step 1 — Install MelonLoader (IL2CPP)
MelonLoader — point it at Boneworks.exe. The installer detects IL2CPP and installs the right hooks.
First launch generates IL2CPP interop assemblies (30-60 seconds).
Step 2 — Install mods
Nexus Mods Boneworks is the main hub. Three popular picks:
- A weapon pack — additional firearms and melee.
- An NPC mod — additional combatants in sandbox mode.
- Map mods — community-built sandbox arenas.
Drop into Boneworks's Mods/ folder. Restart.
Step 3 — Configure
MelonLoader's console window shows mod loading. Most mods are no-config; some have settings files.
Step 4 — Bonelab consideration
If you have Bonelab (the 2022 sequel), its modding scene is much more active. Consider migrating if you're starting fresh — Bonelab modding is closer to a thriving community than Boneworks's stable-but-quiet scene.
Common gotchas
- MelonLoader Mono build instead of IL2CPP. Reinstall via the installer.
- Mod targeted older Boneworks patch. SLZ updates rarely now; most mods are stable.
- Performance dropped. VR physics is heavy. Lower visual quality if needed.
Boneworks's mod scene is a quieter version of broader VR modding patterns.
